Friends of Castle Pulverbatch

Who are the Friends?

The Friends of Castle Pulverbatch are a group of village volunteers, established in 1993 at the instigation of English Heritage to preserve the 12th century Norman castle, a scheduled ancient monument and known locally as the Knapp, one of two motte and bailey castles in the parish. English Heritage's objectives are:

  • Prevention of damage to the fragile earthworks and buried archaeological remains.
  • Maintenance of the informal character of the monument in a natural setting.
  • Promotion of public enjoyment and understanding of the monument.
  • Manage the area for its valuable wildlife habitats.

What do the Friends do?

In addition to the castle, the Friends manage the village's common land, the lower slopes of the Knapp and the Wokkon, to:

  • Restore and preserve ancient grassland.
  • Allow the natural regeneration of native woodland.
  • Establish and maintain useable footpaths.
  • Maintain the varied habitats for wildlife, plants and insects.

How you can help

  • Support us with a donation, however small, for petrol and equipment maintenance - cheques to ‘Friends of Castle Pulverbatch’ gratefully received by Andrew Wood or Peter Hartshorn
  • Provide native tree seedlings for replanting on the Wokkon (to Peter Hartshorn)
  • Avoid dog fouling, remove litter and prevent the unthinking from leaving any
  • Enjoy the walks, fauna and flora – have you seen the bluebells on the Wokken?
