The Village Hall
How it all began. Until 1921 the village did not possess a meeting place for the community but this was remedied by several village stalwarts who acquired an ex-army hut from a first world war training camp. This remains the core of the present building and some original details are still visible in places.
Despite piecemeal improvements over recent years, the lack of disabled facilities and the lamentable condition of the gents toilets caused the village hall committee to seek funding to build an extension to house a completely new toilet block and a new entrance foyer. In addition to money raised by the village hall, grants were obtained from the death throes of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and Shropshire Council's Community Fund.
The work on the extension is very nearly finished. The new toilets are in and working and the new lobby has a light, airy feel to it as well as being nice and warm as a result of the new radiators. There is still a little work to be done as the outside still needs painting as well as a few finishing touches to other areas.
Linda Russell has done a fantastic job of managing the whole process and has even persuaded the financiers to include in our grant the cost of re-roofing the whole hall to a matching and insulated standard to the new extension.
Use of the Hall
The Village Hall is available for the benefit of the community. A number of organisations, groups and activities utilise it for regular meetings (eg the WI, parents and toddlers etc.) and it can be hired for social events, wedding receptions, meetings and private parties. Call Debbie Bruce on 718247 for availability and hire charges.
Events
The Village Hall Midsummer Fair will be held this year on Sunday 20th June so mark the date in your diary and come along and enjoy the day.
Financing the Hall
The Village Hall is quite expensive to run and raising sufficient funds to maintain it is a large part of the committee's work. The two major fundraisers are the Summer Fair and the 200 Club, which runs from May to April each year and gives participants the opportunity to gain some return on their investment. Please invest heavily again this spring!
The Village Hall accounts for 2009 are now available.
Hire fees also defray some of the costs so every time anyone uses the Hall it helps to maintain this vital village facility. Donations of any size are also most welcome.
Village Hall Newsletter
A Village Hall newsletter is published several times a year, and circulated throughout the parish, to highlight items of interest to all residents.
